Setting up passwords is…annoying. Even for those of us who work in tech, every time we have to create a new password we find it cumbersome to come up with a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols in a way that someone won’t guess and is also easy to remember.
And yet, we need passwords. They’re an important layer of security so you can protect your digital self and your company’s digital presence.
In this 30-minute webinar, we’re going to talk about what passwords are, how to come up with strong and easy-to-remember passwords, a few dos and don’ts for setting up your password, and where to store your passwords.
Passwords are a layer of security for our online accounts and knowing our password helps us prove who we are so we can access our accounts. It’s like the key to your virtual house.
Passwords protect:
- Your email
- Your online self
- Your banking information
- …and more
In this webinar, we review two secure ways of generating secure passwords, the Correct Horse Battery Staple Method and the Bruce Schneier Password Method. These are both excellent and simple methods for generating secure passwords.
Here are some quick dos and don’ts for setting up new passwords.
- Don’t make it too short
- Do look for 14+ characters, at least upper and lowercase letters (even better if you can add special characters and numbers)
- Don’t make it too simple or easy to guess
- Don’t share it
- Don’t use a password that you’ve seen elsewhere (if you’ve seen it, someone else could have seen it too)
- Do use a password manager
- Don’t use personal information in your password
- Do set up MFA
