Laptop Won’t Turn On? Here’s What to Try Before Calling IT

Nov 7, 2025 | Technology Tips

Few things are more frustrating than pressing the power button on your laptop and getting nothing.

Before you assume the worst, a few quick checks can often bring it back to life. Most issues come down to simple power or hardware glitches you can fix yourself.

Simple Fixes for a Laptop That Won’t Power On

1. Do a power reset

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?” It’s the classic IT line for a reason.

A stuck static charge can prevent your laptop from booting, and a quick power reset usually solves it:

– Unplug the charger.
– Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
– Reconnect the charger and try turning it on again.

This simple step has revived plenty of laptops that looked completely dead.

2. Check the power supply

Power issues are more common than they seem.

– Make sure the charger is plugged in securely on both ends.
– Look for a charging light on the adapter or laptop. If it’s not on, try another outlet or power strip.
– If you can, borrow a compatible charger to test whether yours is the problem.

A faulty adapter or loose connection could be all that’s keeping your laptop from powering up.

3. Remove external devices

Sometimes connected hardware stops a laptop from booting.

Unplug everything. This includes USB drives, external monitors, docking stations, and accessories. Then try starting it again.

If it powers on, reconnect your devices one by one to find the one causing trouble.

4. Check for signs of life

Listen and look closely:

– Do you hear fans or see indicator lights?
– Does the keyboard backlight turn on briefly?
– Do you see anything on the screen, even a flicker?

If you get power but no display, try connecting your laptop to an external monitor to rule out a screen issue.

5. Try a battery reset (for removable batteries)

If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out and unplug the charger. Hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power. Then reinstall the battery, plug the charger back in, and power it on.

For models with built-in batteries, just perform the power reset in Step 1.

6. Call for help if it’s still dead

If none of these steps work, it’s time to contact IT or a professional technician. The issue could be with the internal components (motherboard, RAM, or power circuit) which require expert repair.
